As marketing turns more and more to the web, and strategies become more and more diverse yet interlinked, it seems even more and more important to make sure that if you are in business, then you personally need to be searchable.
So I googled “Stephanie Greene” this morning; there are over 25 LinkedIn profiles with that name, and hundreds of Facebook pages, and pages of noted women with my name. There is a renowned children’s book author, a Boston University professor, and a dentist among the thousands of Stephanie Greene’s out there. Yet I was pleased to note that I came up on page 1 of the search! Phew… since this is my business, I would have been sad if I was invisible to google. Most of my professional life has been lived as Stephanie D. Greene, but one always wonders… does anyone know I’m here?

Yep, the www.FGCreative.com website was there on page one, my LinkedIn profile was on the side, and there was even a photo when you clicked on images… luckily it was a business headshot and not, oh well, never mind!
So what’s the point? If you are in a business where any potential clients are searching for you or checking your references, be sure to searchable. Don’t use cute personal nicknames for screen names, label all business photos, make sure your company’s website identifies you, upload and label articles and information and be found. Of course, if the reverse is true, and you want to lay low, follow the same tips in reverse. Don’t label anything, don’t have social media pages, use cute screen names and you will happily be under the radar. Sounds more fun to be found, especially since I’m in marketing.
The best part of my search? When I put in my middle initial, D, wow… I owned that search page!
